Glenn Springs Academy was incorporated in 1971 as Spartanburg Boys' Home through the vision and leadership of Bob Caldwell and Family Court Judge, Paul McChesney. Their vision was to create an appropriate alternative placement in the Department of Juvenile Justice. They were committed to the belief that given a chance to live a stable life, each of the boys would have a better opportunity of retaining a connection with their family and the community.
Glenn Springs Academy currently serves 32 boys, ages 10 – 21 and their families. Each boy has a story of abuse, neglect or abandonment. In working with Spartanburg School District 6, the goal is to return each boy to the public school setting. Those unable to attend public schools attend the on campus school. The on campus school follows the curriculum of District 6 to best equip and facilitate the boys return to public school.
Every boy in Spartanburg County who is in need of our services has been referred to Glenn Springs Academy but some have not been placed due to the lack of bed space. In addition to Spartanburg County, we also serve boys from other Upstate counties. There is a current waiting list for placement of boys.
Glenn Springs Academy operates year-round, 24 hours a day at the Glenn Springs Campus. The campus consists of a dormitory which accommodates up to 32 residents in semi-private rooms, gymnasium, activity rooms, oversized classrooms/computer lab to meet the special educational needs, and spacious outside recreational areas. The Academy provides an effective method of behavior change (Level System), allowing each client more responsibilities and privileges in return for increasingly responsible behavior(s).
